Looking back on the festival week
The first edition of AntwerpPhoto kicked off with a festival week packed with activities for photography lovers.
On Sunday evening, master-photographer Anton Corbijn held an artist talk in Ampere. Corbijn gave the audience a look behind the scenes of some the most iconic images in the history of rock music.
On Monday a select group of participants attended a workshop by Evelien Kunst, entitled ‘Being successful as a photographer’. The workshop covered pitching, negotiating and promoting yourself as a photographer, among other topics.
We welcomed a full house on Tuesday for the talks ‘6 views on photography’. In 6 chapters, the talks covered different aspects of photography and contemporary visual culture. Nicky Aerts interviewed Carl De Keyzer, Jan Desloover and Marie-Jo Lafontaine among others, and Wouter Vroege and Ad Nuijs presented the new storytelling app Slices.
Afterwards Gautier Platteau moderated 'Photo Ltd., how to finance your photoproject', an interesting debate with experts from different sectors, such as Jozef Lievens, Stephan Vanfleteren and Els De Bruyn. They tackled the question: 'What is the revenue model for professional photographers, in an age in which the free press is struggling and everyone can be a photographer thanks to social media?'
On Wednesday evening World Press Photo director Lars Boering gave a talk on the future of the photojournalistic organisation. He talked about the medium's challenges and how they aim to stay relevant.
We closed the festival week with two days of portfolio reviewing: photographers had the opportunity to have their work looked at by several international top reviewers. Surrounded by the AntwerpPhoto exhibitions, more than 30 portfolio's received the reviewers' undivided attention on Wednesday and Thursday.
